Marriage Changer
I love a party.
I’ve said this before but it bears repeating: If there is a party I love to be invited. I also love attending. I guess it’s the sanguine in me.
I especially loved going to parties … (to be honest I liked going ANYWHERE) when my kids were little. If we got an invitation, I got a babysitter. Mama needed a break here and there.
One particular night stands out so vividly in my mind. I don’t remember what party my husband Bill and I were going to or who was hosting it or even where it was being held. I don’t even remember what we were arguing about before we went.
But I do remember what happened when we got there.
We had ridden to the party in total silence. I was mad and he probably was too. When we got to where we were going I couldn’t get out of the car fast enough.
Except that as I started to get out Bill said … “we need to clear the air”.
Trust me when I say that “clearing the air” was NOT on my agenda.
He then said … “I am not going in there to spend the next three hours talking and laughing with people and pretending that everything is ok, when it is not. We can clear the air now … and mean it … or we can go home”.
Did I mention that I love a party?
I told him that wasn’t really fair and we could talk about it later and I needed to get inside and blah, blah, blah.
He said “I’m not going in until we clear this up”.
The man doesn’t play charades. Not even at a party.
And, as silly as it may sound, that day spoke volumes to me about our marriage and the priority he placed on it.
I’ve never forgotten it.
I never will.
25 years and counting.
We should have a party. :)
